"The Death of Color"
March 21, 2015 * 6:00PM
PRODUCE® Gallery
415 Peoples St., | Corpus Christi, TX
The first art exhibition Gilbert has had in over two years begins with the removal of color. “For the past 8 years, color has played a pivotal role in my work. A single color would often influence an entire series of paintings.” he said. So by accident, he took a black and photograph of one of these pieces and was amazed by what he saw. Something that was created to be seen in color took on a whole different meaning.
“By removing the color, you’re now forced to focus on the subject of the piece and it’s true defining meaning. What that meaning is depends on the person viewing it. You see that’s what is so awesome about art. It means something differnet each one of us.”
Gilbert’s one night art show will feature limited edition black and white prints of some of his previous works in color as well as new original pieces.
"In Reverie of Form"
March 6 - 27, 2012
Agora Gallery
530 W 25th St. | New York, NY 10001
Cantu’s mixed media approach allows his work to take on a sense of liveliness and play as his subjects color their own meaning onto a background of rich textures and spontaneous strokes of ink, pencil and pastels. His work serves as an expression of complex emotional states becoming more intense, spirited and unsuspecting as the artist moves each piece closer to realization. His adventurous process, along with his penchant for the bold use of color and texture associated with his Mexican heritage, make Cantu’s work imaginative and provocative as his central subject speaks eloquently on behalf of troves of emotions, memories and musings.
